Calls for a Global, One-World Government

Both OT and NT passages tell us that the end of the age sees the restoration of a pagan empire that culminates in a global government and a sole religious system (see sign 4 for a discussion of the latter). This system is like a restored Babel and is placed under the authority of the Antichrist for a brief time (Revelation 13:3–4; Revelation 13:7–8; Daniel 7:16–24), which is followed by the ushering in of the Day of the Lord and the restoration of all things with the return of Christ.

For the first time in the known history of the world, calls for a global form of government began being voiced in the early to mid-20th century. And now, in the early 21st century, we are regularly hearing the “globalists” of the modern age speaking about a “new world order.”¹ If one has eyes to see, a desire for a unified world order can be seen in the writings of scholars and the elite down through the ages — see Francis Bacon,² Georg Wilhelm Friedrich Hegel, Friedrich Nietzsche,³ Yuval Harari,⁴ the literature of Freemasonry and other secret societies (often dismissed as conspiracy theory), and the writings of statesmen such as Henry Kissinger,⁵ Pentagon officials, UN leaders,^6, 7 and the World Health Organization.⁸ World figures calling for a “New World Order” or “One World Government” have included H. G. Wells,^9–11 Pope Francis,¹² Winston Churchill, Jimmy Carter, Robert Kennedy, Richard Nixon, David Rockefeller, Mikhail Gorbachev,¹³ George Bush, George W. Bush, Tony Blair, and Gordon Brown.

What Scripture describes

From Scripture itself, we are told to expect a global system to arise that eventually installs the Antichrist — empowered by the dragon, Satan — as its titular leader. The apostle John in the book of Revelation has a vision of a “beast” that rises out of the sea, which has seven heads and ten horns (Revelation 13:1). This is an analogue to Daniel’s vision (see Daniel 7:16–24). Daniel 2:41–42 predicts a ten-nation alliance which is reflected in the statue from Nebuchadnezzar’s dream, where a final world government consists of ten entities represented by the ten toes of the statue. The beast will subdue three of these nations (see Daniel 7:8), and the rest follow him. The ruler of this empire has power and authority as given to him by Satan (Revelation 13:2), will be worshipped by the entire world (Revelation 13:3–4), and has authority over “every tribe, people, language, and nation” (Revelation 13:7).

Others reading the same signs

Many modern writers and scholars both inside and outside of the church are seeing this occur. For a recent treatment of this topic, see One World Government in Prophecy. They rightly note that Bible prophecy foresees a secular One World Government or New World Order at the end of this age, just before the return of Jesus. It is seen as the fourth and last empire of the prophet Daniel’s great statue (Daniel 2) and as the fourth beast of Daniel’s dream (Daniel 7). It is also seen in the two beasts of Revelation 13 — a world dictator and the Antichrist. These authors note that:

“A drive to World Government by 2030 is being helped by the UN 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and by the agenda of the World Economic Forum (WEF). The One World Government has the powerful, brutal, controlling characteristics of pagan Rome, and may arise in the form of a Revived Roman Empire. It uses the ‘mark of the beast’ as its trump card for the control of all on earth. The good news is that this final government is short-lived and will be totally destroyed at the return of Jesus (Daniel 2).”
